Aerobic Decoupling

Aerobic decoupling is an important metric expressing the ability to maintain a steady effort below the anaerobic threshold for a long period of time and with minimal fatigue.

Decoupling happens when Heart Rate or Power start to drift away from each other (either by increased heart rate while maintaining the same power output, or by a drop in power output while keeping the same average heart rate).

In other words, the longer can ride without seeing a significant decoupling between your Heart Rate and Power, the more fit you are.

Aerobic decoupling is a great indicator of endurance and aerobic base training which is an important part of the training at the beginning of every season. Aerobically fit endurance athletes are usually able to maintain a decoupling ratio of less than 5%.
